About John Johnson
Worked as a Professional Photographer for 30+ years after I graduated from Brooks Institute of Photography. After raising 5 children with my wife we retired and moved to southern Utah to paint. I do mostly landscapes of the National Parks in the southwest. Most of my work is oil on stretched canvas although I also paint abstracts using Oil and Acrylic. I spend a lot of time in the art village of Kayenta where we have studios for painting, pottery and photography.
History of John Johnson
I was born in San Carlos, California I have 1 brother and 4 sisters. My grand father was a photographer hence my guide to the arts. I always had a camera with me shooting B & W and developing my work in my home darkroom. In 1965 I joined the Air Force thinking I would be involved in photography. Ha! In the Air Force photography was recon, and I didn’t fly so I loaded air recon cameras all day. While in the air force I met my future wife. When my enlistment was up we moved to Sana Barbara so I could attend Brooks Institute of Photography. I graduated with 3 majors Portrait, Illustration and Photo Lab Management in 1972 only 6 graduated from my class of 35. It is a very difficult school. We stayed in Santa Barbara for 2 more years as I did free lance work from my studio. I traveled much of the time so we moved to Sacramento CA. and worked for a studio there. We also started to raise our family of 5 children, 2 boys and 3 girls. I honed my shills with Jim Smith Photography where I did any type of photography that he had for me. Here I decide Illustrating was my calling. So we moved to Cincinnati where the opportunities were better. The next 30 years I worked for a number of companied doing illustration photography. During all this time I painted as a hobby, oil, watercolor, acrylic 1000’s of pieces giving away most selling some. The biggest reward I got was a complement and if you liked one of my pieces it was yours. I never planned on making money painting as I did with photography. That paid for our home our spring breaks to Florida and it put all my children through college, In 2001 we retired to southern Utah to enjoy the southwest outdoors. I found it is a great place to paint, the sky is a unreal blue and the mountains are red. The National Parks are at every turn. I have many awards and have sold 1000’s of paintings. So now I paint almost everyday and hope the work I do is pleasing and brings joy to the people who buy it. My biggest reward is when someone tells me how much they like my work, Thank You.
